 Mārahau Outdoor Education Camp  

Mārahau Outdoor Education Camp is sited in a very attractive New Zealand seashore bay directly across the road from wide, safe, golden beaches and a sheltered inlet. The camp can accommodate up to 69 people with very reasonable charges. It is surrounded by native and exotic forests, farmlets, hills, streams & wetlands as well as the Abel Tasman National park.  

 

The camp provides social, physical and academic challenges from a prime site. Tenting, kayaking, swimming, wading,  yachting, walks, hikes, native bush, estuary, streams, cockles, a track or low tide walk to Tinline and Coquille Bay, or a picnic at Apple Tree Bay. There are also lots of local activities e.g. Old MacDonald’s Farm, Water Taxi trips, Ngarua Caves on the Takaka Hill, Glow Worms, Pa site, Paddle Boarding and Waka Ama.

The camp is available to:

 

All Registered Schools which are primary, intermediate or area schools in the education district of Nelson/ Marlborough/Buller/ Westland during the school terms.

 

Private groups are also able to book the camp during the school holidays. 

 

Preference is given to:

 

Registered Schools as above for the school term weeks and can include weekends if arranged in the original booking. School weeks usually run from Monday morning to Friday noon 12:00pm.

Bookings: 

Bookings may only be made one year ahead from the date requested.

A deposit of $300 must be paid within 7 days of the Trust confirming the dates to secure your booking.  This deposit is forfeited if the booking is later cancelled; otherwise it is credited to the total charge. 

As there can be considerable time between confirming a booking and arriving PLEASE ensure you email the Trust (marahau.trust@gmail.com) a week before your camp date to confirm arrival time etc.

 

Camp charges:  

Camp charges will be reviewed periodically at the discretion of the Trust.

 

  • Registered Schools: Minimum charge per night $115 for (up to and including ten people) each extra person costs  $11.50 per  night. The cottage is available for school groups as additional accommodation (weekdays and term time only), it is an extra charge of $70/night. 

  • Private Groups weekend rate $340 for two nights for (up to and including ten people) additional people         $17/ adult, $11.50/ Child (Under 15 Years), and children under 5 are free.

  • Private Groups holiday rate is a minimum charge of $170/ night (first 10 people) then additional people are as follows $17/ adult, $11.50/ Child (Under 15 Years), and children under 5 are free.

  • Day visitors $4 per persons 

  • Users will have to meet costs for damage to Trust property occurring during your camp.

 

All school or private group charges should be paid within 1 week after departure. Please direct deposit into our NBS trust account:

When setting up the payment, please use your name or group name and the dates you stayed, along with the reference: Camp. 

On Arrival: 

  • Ensure all your campers know the main points of using this camp with care and consideration for other residents in Mārahau.  

  • Read information on the kitchen walls.

Before Departure: 

PLEASE return the camp to the condition it was in on your arrival – tidy and cleaned.

 

  • Read the chart on the wall behind the kitchen door; follow the clean up according to the cards provided. Fasten all doors and windows, open or shut

  • Return all shells to the beach below high tide

 

General Conditions for use of the camp:

 

  • The camp must not be used to hold weddings, parties, and birthday functions etc without prior approval from the trust.

  • NO Dogs or pets allowed in the camp at any time.

  • Conserve water, especially hot water.

  • Turn off unneeded lights

  • Conserve cockles - take only what you can use at camp on that day and return any shells to the low tide mark.

  • In case of unreported damage or the non-cleaning of the Camp by users, the Trust shall contact and charge the users controlling authority for work required.

  •  Users will have to meet reasonable cost for damage to Trust property occurring during your camp.

 

The Trust may withdraw the right of any group to use the Camp at any time.
